Make Your Own Keychain and DIY Kydex Sheath Belt Loops

Sometimes we need to improvise our own stuff. I have an Aurora Fire Starter. Basically a ferro rod with a protective case that doesn’t really fit on a keychain. So I made my own keychain out of a zip tie and a clip I had laying around.

Next adjust the zip tie to the desired size, but do not cut it off flush.

The next step is to take a lighter and melt the zip tie. As the plastic melt it flows and fuses with the zip tie lock so that you won’t have to worry about it tightening up while in the pocket.

I have a Tops Quick Skin that came with rubber Straps that have a tendency to pop open and I have nearly lost this knife on two occasions, and I have found it hanging off my belt by one strap multiple times. I am going to repeat this process to replace those rubber loops. I put a belt in the zip ties to help space the tightness.

If the straps end up being too loose, you will have to cut them off and try again. And by melting the cut off portion of the zip tie, it won’t cut you.
